但凡一个人能有这样的成就,无论是男是女,是老是少,是中国人还是外国人,美丽这等词汇都已经成为浅薄而无谓的媚俗,无法与他们并列。
但是,就在他荣获首届国家最高科学技术奖的喜庆日子,在他接受首都新闻媒体的联合采访时,我忽然听到了“美丽”这个词,突然发现,这位享誉世界、功勋卓着的“杂交水稻”之父的横空出世,竟然和美丽有那么直接的关系。
那是我在这次采访中惟一有机会提出的一个问题,因为我始终不解,像他这样出生在北京、生长在武汉、重庆等大城市、从小上教会学校的.人,为什么在风华正茂之时违背母愿选择了艰苦而陌生的农学?

这片美丽的记忆,成了他心目中永远的梦幻,使袁隆平从此与“农”结下不解之缘。但当他第一次真的来到农村时,不禁大吃一惊:难道这就是自己多年来向往的最美的梦境?现实中农村的落后、贫瘠和疮痍,让寻找美丽的袁隆平大失所望,但却绝没有让他就此退缩,“真的,我从没后悔,我这个人有点‘痴’,认准的路—定要走到底。”60年代初那场席卷全国的饥饿,深深震撼了他的心灵,他把童年的憧憬蕴藏心底,将“所有人不再挨饿”奉为了终生的追求。
他义无反顾一头栽进了“杂交水稻”这个世界性的难题之中。为了杂交水稻,他几乎奉献了自己美好年华中的一切,知识、汗水、灵感、心血,没有什么不是围着杂交水稻而运转。在他研究开始的最初,为了获得一株必须的水稻天然雄性不育株,他和新婚妻子一起,用了整整两年时间,顶着烈日差不多踏遍了当地所有的稻田,前前后后共检查了14000个稻穗。
这样巨大的付出,在他几十年的育种研究生涯中,可以说成了家常便饭。无论是科学道路上必然的挫折、失败,还是人为的干扰破坏,所有遇到到的磨难都曾经跳出来考验他的心智。如果他仅仅是美丽的欣赏者,也许他早就被沉重的现实消磨一空;但作为以自己的生命和科学的力量去创造美好的科技工作者,袁隆平百折不挠,坚韧不拔。
或许上天也被这种精诚所感化,自1966年他的第一篇论文《水稻的雄性不孕性》在中科院《科学通讯》第4期发表,引起了国内外瞩目,他的研究成果一个接着一个,他的杂交稻创造的神话一项接着一项,30多年间他在这个领域始终保持着世界领先地位。而新千年里,他主持的国家“超级稻”研究项目又传佳音,续写了“绿色革命”的新突破……
从1976年至1999年,我国累计推广种植杂交水稻35亿多亩,增产稻谷3500亿公斤,相当于每年解决3500万人的吃饭问题,确保了我国以仅占世界7%的耕地,养活了占世界22%的人口。

不知多少人梦寐以求的这些辉煌、荣耀、名利,似乎丝毫也没有对袁隆平产生任何改变。从播种到收获,他依然风尘仆仆地骑着摩托车去试验田;从春夏到秋冬,他依然追赶着阳光从北到南察看育种基地。即使这次来京领奖,他也无时不惦记着他的试验。“我们超级稻的培育十分紧张,不管我在哪,都要求基地3天报一次数据,这样可以随时分析情况。”一再声称不善言辞的袁隆平,谈起他的水稻育种却雄辩而流畅,“我们有信心,提前两年实现亩产800公斤的目标。”
已经功成名就的袁隆平仍驱赶着自己不断前行,“我在有生之年还有两大心愿,一是要把超级杂交水稻培育成功,这样,21世纪谁来养活中国的问题就解决了;再一个是把杂交水稻推向世界,造福全人类。”
