Dragon Boat Festival
Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar. It is a time when people commemorate the death of Qu Yuan, a famous poet and statesman from ancient China.
There are many legends and stories associated with the Dragon Boat Festival. One of the most famous stories is about Qu Yuan. He was a loyal minister who was banished by the king due to false accusations. Devastated by the state of his country, Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River on the 5th day of the 5th month in 278 BC. The local people, who admired him, rushed to the river with their boats to search for his body. They threw rice dumplings into the water to prevent fish from eating his body and beat drums to scare away evil spirits. This is said to be the origin of dragon boat racing and eating zongzi, a traditional food made of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves.
Dragon boat racing is one of the most exciting activities during the Dragon Boat Festival. It involves teams of rowers paddling in unison to the rhythm of a drumbeat. The boats are often decorated like dragons, with a dragon's head at the front and a tail at the back. The races are not only a thrilling competition but also a way to pay homage to Qu Yuan and promote teamwork and unity.
Another important tradition of the Dragon Boat Festival is eating zongzi. Zongzi can be filled with a variety of ingredients, such as beans, meat, or nuts. They are wrapped in bamboo leaves and then steamed or boiled. The shape of zongzi varies from region to region, with pyramid-shaped ones being the most common. The taste and texture of zongzi are unique and loved by people of all ages.
In addition to dragon boat racing and eating zongzi, there are other customs and activities associated with the Dragon Boat Festival. These include hanging up the leaves of mugwort, wearing colorful silk threads to ward off evil spirits, and making medicinal pouches to protect against diseases.
Dragon Boat Festival is not only a time for celebration but also an opportunity to remember and honor the wisdom and courage of Qu Yuan. It is a cherished holiday that brings people together, promotes Chinese culture, and showcases the spirit of unity and perseverance.

Another memorable part of the Dragon Boat Festival was the food. I had the opportunity to try different types of zongzi, the traditional food of the festival. I enjoyed the taste and texture of the sticky rice, combined with various fillings like pork, beans, and nuts. The zongzi were wrapped in bamboo leaves, which added a unique aroma to the dish. I also learned how to make zongzi myself, under the guidance of a local family. It was a fun and hands-on experience, and I appreciated the effort and skill required to make this traditional delicacy.
During the Dragon Boat Festival, I also had the chance to participate in other activities, such as hanging up the leaves of mugwort and making medicinal pouches. These customs were new to me, but I found them fascinating and meaningful. They were a reminder of the rich history and cultural significance of the festival.

At the end of the Zhou Dynasty, the area we now know as China had fallen into a state of fragmentation and conflict. While the Zhou dynasty had ruled for several centuries, several other states, originally feudal domains, tried to carve out their own kingdoms. The state of Qin would eventually emerge the victor and unify all of China under one rule for the first time in history.
Qu Yuan served as minister to the Zhou Emperor. A wise and articulate man, he was loved by the common people. He did much to fight against the rampant corruption that plagued the court-- thereby earning the envy and fear of other officials. Therefore, when he urged the emperor to avoid conflict with the Qin Kingdom, the officials pressured the Emperor to have him removed from service. In exile, he traveled, taught and wrote for several years. Hearing that the Zhou had been defeated by the Qin, he fell into despair and threw himself into the Milou River. His last poem reads:
Many a heavy sigh I have in my despair,Grieving that I was born in such an unlucky time.I yoked a team of jade dragons to a phoenix chariot,And waited for the wind to come,to sour up on my journey
As he was so loved by the people, fishermen rushed out in long boats, beating drums to scare the fish away, and throwing zong zi into the water to feed braver fish so that they would not eat Qu Yuans body.
The Modern Dragon Boat Festival started from that time to this day, people commemorated Qu Yuan through Dragon Boat Races, eating zong zi, and several other activities, on the anniversary of his death: the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.
Dragon Boat races are the most exciting part of the festival, drawing crowds of spectators. Dragon Boats are generally brightly painted and decorated canoes. Ranging anywhere from 40 to 100 feet in length, their heads are shaped like open-mouthed dragons, while the sterns end with a scaly tail. Depending on the length, up to 80 rowers can power the boat. A drummer and flag-catcher stand at the front of the boat. Before a dragon boat enters competition, it must be "brought to life" by painting the eyes in a sacred ceremony. Races can have any number of boats competing, with the winner being the first team to grab a flag at the end of the course. Annual races take place all over China, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and other overseas Chinese communities.
