一、前言
尤金·奥尼尔是美国现代著名戏剧家。1922年他创作的戏剧《毛猿》描写了一个名叫扬克的邮船锅炉工的悲剧人生。扬克原来认为自己是使铁炼成钢的人,然而,在听到轮船公司董事长的千金小姐骂他是肮脏的畜的生时,打破了他内心的平衡,精神支柱彻底被击垮。他试图返回过去,但往回走并没有出路。然后他到纽约(是开放的社会)寻找自我归属。但是社会对他很冷淡。从而激起他报仇的心理,他袭击阔佬(代表了资产阶级)被关进了监狱。出狱后,他到世界产业工人联合会(代表了无产阶级组织)去,主张用暴力清除资本家的财产。但产联的干部怕他搞无政府主义的恐怖手段,不敢吸收他入会,把他撵了出去。无论是资产阶级,还是无产阶级都不是他的归属所在。所以他只能从社会逃离,在动物园里找到认同。把自己认同为动物,也是他死亡的最终结局。
二、《毛猿》悲剧中的四类主要人物
《毛猿》悲剧的主题表现主要是通过四类人来表现出来的,即以米尔德里德为代表的处于统治地位的资产阶级;以主人公扬克为代表的倒退到原始社会的下层工人;以派迪为代表的复古主义和以勒昂为代表的空想社会主义。他们各自对人类的前途保持不同的看法,从而构成了与主人公扬克之间的思想冲突,对表现主题起着重要作用。
以米尔德里德为代表的处于统治地位的资产阶级,他们与主人公扬克之间的矛盾是最尖锐,也是最为直接的矛盾,是资产阶级与劳动人民之间的矛盾。属于敌我矛盾范畴,这种矛盾是不可调和的。
派迪是个老水手,爱尔兰人,他向往帆船时代,留恋封建社会,是一个复古主义者。他以往受资本家剥削和压迫的经历使他感到与周围环境的不协调,认为工人决不是处在“主人”的位置上,他们只是受人摆弄、任人奴役的那些“拿血肉给机器做齿轮”的人。这才是工人真正所处的地位,他们也就根本没有理由自我陶醉。正因为他对自身价值与位置有较现实的认识,他的内心就有一种与环境不和谐的感受。他痛恨这个资本主义制度,他认为,封建社会的帆船时代要比资本主义社会的机器大轮船时代美好得多。派迪当然不接受扬克的观点,也不同意扬克的复仇行动。他们两人在思想上的冲突,表现了封建社会与资本主义社会在思想上的分裂,派迪对现实资本主义社会的认识是清醒的,但对封建社会的认识却带有盲目性和虚幻性。历史的发展无法逆转,永远都是向前的。他主张回到封建帆船时代去的愿望,也正和扬克主张回到原始时代去一样,只能是幻想而已,因此,派迪也不可能在他的那条道路上找到人的归属。
勒昂也是一个烧火工人,一个空想社会主义者。对资本主义社会的本质,他和派迪一样也有较清醒的认识,因而他也不同意扬克的那种盲目自信。他认为,他们这些烧火工人生活和工作的这艘大轮船是地狱,而且工人们很快就要死在里面,因此,就不应该麻木不仁地满足现状,糊里糊涂地任人宰割。他还认为,工人的这种处境与地位并不是上帝安排好了的,人生本应该是自由平等的,不平等现象是那些坐在头等舱里的资产阶级造成的,勒昂的可贵之处不仅在于他对现实处境有深刻明智的认识,而且具有明确的阶级意识。但是,他的思想观点并没有被扬克及伙伴们接受,因此他始终处于孤立的地位。当扬克被米尔德里德小姐激怒而准备复仇时,勒昂给予了大力支持。不过,扬克始终认识不到自己和米尔德里德小姐的冲突实际上是工人阶级与资产阶级之间的'矛盾。勒昂则力图想说服扬克,提高他的阶级觉悟,以便让他去联合工人一起跟资产阶级作斗争。尽管勒昂有清醒的阶级意识,但他对资产阶级所要采取的斗争方式却是不现实的。显然,勒昂所宣扬的是通过和平手段、议会道路去争取无产阶级解放的空想社会主义政治纲领。按勒昂的方法是否可以找到现代人的归属呢?回答是否定的。从整个剧情发展看,勒昂要想通过和平手段使高度发达的资本主义社会转化为社会主义社会,也像派迪想回到封建社会一样是无法实现的。
虽然在性格特征上这三个人存在着很大的区别,但是这三人的精神实质都是希望在现实世界中找到自己的位置,找到真正的归属。

《毛猿》就是一部由于人在社会中被异化,以“寻找自我”为主题的剧作,使人们体会出在现代文明社会中,失去精神归属的人们痛苦而扭曲的心灵。扬克象征着不断进取的人类精神,他是全剧的核心人物。邮轮、警狱、动物园的铁笼都是现代资本主义社会的象征,扬克辗转奋斗于其中。他由自信到迷惘,有迷惘到抗争直至绝望与死亡。他的抗争先是在邮轮,继而在监狱,最后死于关猩猩的铁笼。全剧借这一基本情节隐喻了人类为摆脱苦难,寻找自身位置与价值,探索人生归属的过程,象征性地表现了现代人难以摆脱异己力量的悲剧命运。
