The Chinese Qixi Festival, also known as the Double Seventh Festival, is a romantic holiday celebrated on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. It is a day when couples express their love and devotion to each other. The festival is based on the ancient legend of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl.
According to the legend, there was once a poor cowherd named Niu Lang who lived with his ox. One day, the ox spoke to Niu Lang and told him about a magical world where fairies lived. The ox also told him about the beautiful Weaver Girl, Zhinü, who was the seventh daughter of the Goddess of Heaven.
Niu Lang, intrigued by the story, decided to visit the magical world. When he arrived, he saw Zhinü and instantly fell in love with her. The two of them got married and lived happily together. They had two children and their life seemed perfect.
However, the Goddess of Heaven was not happy about their marriage. She believed that a mortal and a fairy should not be together. So, she ordered Zhinü to return to the heavens. Niu Lang was heartbroken and desperately tried to find a way to be with his wife again.
With the help of the ox, Niu Lang was able to cross the Milky Way and reach the heavens. He pleaded with the Goddess of Heaven to let him be with his wife. Touched by his devotion, she allowed the couple to meet once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month.
And so, on this day, the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl are reunited. It is said that if it rains on this day, it is because the Weaver Girl is crying tears of joy. People celebrate by making wishes, praying for love and happiness, and enjoying the beauty of the starry night sky.
The legend of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl is a beautiful story that symbolizes true love overcoming all obstacles. It reminds us of the importance of cherishing and appreciating our loved ones. The Qixi Festival is a special day to celebrate love and to honor this timeless tale.

Another popular activity is to make wishes. It is believed that on Qixi Festival, the stars Vega and Altair, which represent the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl, are closest to each other. People make wishes for happiness, love, and the fulfillment of their dreams. Some even write their wishes on colorful strips of paper and tie them to trees, hoping that they will come true.
In recent years, technology has also played a role in the celebration of Qixi Festival. Many couples exchange messages or video calls to express their love and affection, especially if they are unable to be together on this special day. Social media platforms are filled with sweet messages and photos of couples celebrating their love.
The Qixi Festival is not only for couples but also for singles. In recent years, a new trend called "Naked Branches Party" has emerged. Singles gather together to celebrate their independence and enjoy activities such as karaoke, games, and speed dating. It is a fun way to embrace singlehood and make new friends.
While the way we celebrate Qixi Festival may have changed over time, the spirit of the holiday remains the same – it is a day to celebrate love and cherish the special people in our lives.
