Writing about Festivals - Part One

Festivals are an integral part of every culture, and they bring people together to celebrate and enjoy special occasions. One of the most popular festivals in my country is Chinese New Year. It is a time when families come together to welcome the new year and wish for good fortune and prosperity. In this essay, I will discuss the traditions and customs associated with Chinese New Year.

Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is based on the lunar calendar and usually falls in late January or early February. The festival lasts for 15 days and is filled with various activities and traditions. The preparations for Chinese New Year start weeks in advance, with families cleaning their homes to sweep away any bad luck from the previous year. It is believed that a clean house will bring good luck and fortune for the coming year.

On the eve of Chinese New Year, families gather for a reunion dinner. It is a time when relatives from near and far come together to share a meal and exchange gifts. The dinner usually consists of traditional dishes such as dumplings, fish, and sticky rice cake. Each dish has its own symbolic meaning, representing good luck, wealth, and health.

During the festival, people decorate their homes with red lanterns, couplets, and paper cuttings. Red is considered a lucky color in Chinese culture, and it is believed to ward off evil spirits. Fireworks and firecrackers are also an integral part of the celebrations. The loud noises and bright lights are believed to scare away evil spirits and bring good luck for the new year.

Another important tradition during Chinese New Year is the giving of red envelopes. These envelopes, known as "hongbao," contain money and are given to children and unmarried adults as a symbol of good luck and blessings. It is a way to wish them prosperity and happiness in the coming year.

In conclusion, Chinese New Year is a festive and joyous occasion filled with traditions and customs. It is a time when families come together to celebrate and welcome the new year. The festival brings people closer and strengthens the bond between relatives. The traditions associated with Chinese New Year are deeply rooted in Chinese culture and have been passed down from generation to generation.

Writing about Festivals - Part Two

In this essay, I will discuss another festival that holds great significance in my country - Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights. Diwali is a Hindu festival celebrated in India and other parts of the world by Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains. It marks the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.

Diwali is celebrated over five days and usually falls in October or November. The festival begins with the cleaning and decorating of homes and workplaces. People light oil lamps, known as "diyas," to illuminate their surroundings and welcome the goddess of wealth and prosperity, Lakshmi. The lights are believed to guide her way into their homes and bring blessings.

One of the highlights of Diwali is the bursting of firecrackers. The loud noises and colorful fireworks light up the night sky and create a festive atmosphere. It is believed that the noise and lights scare away evil spirits and bring good luck for the coming year. However, in recent years, there has been a growing concern about the environmental impact of firecrackers, and many people are opting for eco-friendly celebrations.

Another important aspect of Diwali is the exchange of gifts and sweets. Families and friends visit each other's homes, exchange gifts, and indulge in delicious sweets and snacks. It is a time of joy and togetherness, as people share their happiness and blessings with one another.

The festival also holds religious significance, as it commemorates the return of Lord Rama, his wife Sita, and his brother Lakshmana from exile after defeating the demon king Ravana. It is believed that Lord Rama's return symbolizes the victory of good over evil and the triumph of righteousness.

In conclusion, Diwali is a vibrant and joyous festival that celebrates the victory of light over darkness. It is a time of cleaning, decorating, and illuminating homes with oil lamps. The bursting of firecrackers, exchange of gifts, and indulgence in sweets add to the festive spirit. Diwali is a time when people come together to celebrate and share their happiness and blessings with one another.

In China, Mid-autumn Day is considered to be a symbol of family reunion. On this day, all the family members gather together at home to celebrate this special occasion. Last year, I could not celebrate the festival with my family because I was in university. However, this special day left a deep impression on me.

I still remember the atmosphere of that evening. All the students who could not go back home assembled in our classroom, having a party to celebrate this traditional festival. We tried our best to show our own enthusiasm. As an ethnic minority, I performed a peacock dance, which received warm applause. After the two-hour party, we went out to the playground and sat together to appreciate the moon because it is a tradition on Mid-autumn Day. We ate moon cakes, played cards, and listened to romantic poems recited by one of our classmates. In that harmonious atmosphere, nobody felt lonely or homesick even though we were far away from our homes.

Thanks to our classmates, I experienced such a colorful and interesting Mid-autumn Day at my university. Thus, I learned to value all the festivals I spent during my universit
