Title: The Benefits of Reading

Reading is a fundamental skill that plays a crucial role in our lives. It not only helps us gain knowledge and expand our horizons, but also improves our language skills and enhances our imagination. In this article, I will discuss the benefits of reading and why it is important to cultivate this habit from an early age.

Firstly, reading is a great way to acquire knowledge. Whether it's a non-fiction book, a newspaper article, or an academic journal, reading exposes us to various subjects and ideas. It allows us to explore different perspectives and learn about topics that we may not be familiar with. By reading, we can broaden our understanding of the world and become more knowledgeable individuals.

Secondly, reading improves our language skills. When we read, we come across new words, phrases, and sentence structures. This exposure to diverse vocabulary and grammar patterns helps us expand our linguistic abilities. Reading also enhances our writing skills, as we can learn from the writing styles of different authors and incorporate them into our own work. Additionally, reading improves our reading comprehension and critical thinking skills, which are essential for success in academic and professional settings.

Furthermore, reading stimulates our imagination and creativity. Unlike watching movies or TV shows, reading requires us to visualize the scenes and characters in our minds. This exercise of imagination allows us to create our own interpretations and connect with the story on a deeper level. Reading also exposes us to different cultures, places, and time periods, which broadens our perspectives and inspires us to think outside the box.

In addition to these cognitive benefits, reading also has numerous emotional and psychological advantages. It can be a form of escapism, providing a temporary break from our daily lives and allowing us to immerse ourselves in a different world. Reading can also be therapeutic, as it helps us relax, reduce stress, and improve our mental well-being. Moreover, reading can foster empathy and understanding, as we can relate to the characters' experiences and emotions.

In conclusion, reading is a valuable and enriching activity that offers numerous benefits. It expands our knowledge, improves our language skills, enhances our imagination, and provides emotional and psychological well-being. Therefore, it is important to cultivate the habit of reading from an early age and encourage others to do the same. So let's grab a book, immerse ourselves in its words, and embark on a journey of learning and self-discovery.

Title: The Power of Books

Books have been a source of knowledge, inspiration, and entertainment for centuries. They hold the power to transport us to different worlds, introduce us to diverse characters, and ignite our imagination. In this article, I will explore the impact of books on our lives and explain why they are an essential part of our personal and intellectual growth.

Firstly, books have the ability to educate and enlighten us. They provide us with information on various subjects, ranging from history and science to philosophy and psychology. Through books, we can learn about different cultures, explore complex ideas, and gain insights into the human experience. Books not only teach us about the world around us but also teach us about ourselves, helping us understand our own thoughts, emotions, and desires.

Secondly, books have the power to inspire and motivate us. The stories of remarkable individuals, both fictional and real, can ignite a spark within us and push us to pursue our dreams and aspirations. Reading about the achievements and struggles of others can serve as a source of encouragement and remind us that anything is possible with determination and perseverance. Books also provide us with role models and teach us valuable life lessons that we can apply in our own lives.

Furthermore, books foster empathy and understanding. By immersing ourselves in the lives of different characters, we gain a deeper understanding of their experiences, emotions, and perspectives. This empathy allows us to develop a greater appreciation for diversity and promotes tolerance and acceptance. Through books, we can walk in someone else's shoes and develop a more compassionate and inclusive mindset.

In addition to these personal benefits, books also have a societal impact. They serve as a medium for social and cultural exchange, allowing us to connect with people from different backgrounds and gain a broader perspective on the world. Books can also challenge societal norms and inspire social change. They can shed light on social injustices, spark conversations, and motivate individuals to take action.

In conclusion, books are a powerful tool that has the ability to educate, inspire, and foster empathy. They hold a special place in our lives and contribute to our personal and intellectual growth. Whether it's through acquiring knowledge, finding inspiration, or developing empathy, books have the power to transform us and shape our worldview. So let's cherish the magic of books and continue to explore the vast worlds they offer.

AnIngenious Love Letter

There once lived a lad who was deeply in love with a girl, but disliked by the girl’s father, who didn’t want to see any further development of their love. The lad was eager to write to the girl, yet he was quite sure that the father would read it first. So he wrote such a letter to the girl:

My love for you I once expressed

no longer lasts, instead, my distaste for you

is growing with each passing day. Next time I see you,

I even won’t like that look yours.

I’ll do nothing but

look away from you. You can never expect I’ll

marry you. The last chat we had

was so dull and dry that you shouldn’t think it made me eager to see you again.

If we get married, I firmly believe I’ll

live a hard life, I can never

live happily with you, I’ll devote myself

but not

to you. No one else is more

harsh and selfish and least

solicitous and considerate than you.

I sincerely want to let you know

what I said is true. Please do me a favor by

ending our relations and refrain from

writing me a reply. Your letter is always full of

things which displease me. You have no

sincere care for me. So long! Please believe

I don’t love you any longer. Don’t think

I still have a love of you!

Having read the letter, the father felt relieved and gave it to his daughter with a light heart. The girl also felt quite pleased after she read it carefully, her lad still had a deep love for her. Do you know why? In fact, she felt very sad when she read the letter for the first time. But she read it for a few more times and , at last, she found the key – only every other line should be read, that is the first line, the third, the fifth … and so on to the end.

(二)AnEmpty Box

Once upon a time, a man punished his 5-year-old daughter for using up the family's only roll of expensive gold wrapping paper. Money was tight, and he became even more upset when on Christmas Eve, he saw that the child had pasted the gold paper so as to decorate a shoebox to put under the Christmas tree.

Nevertheless, the next morning the little girl, filled with excitement, brought the gift box to her father and said, xxxThis is for you, Daddy!xxx

As he opened the box, the father was embarrassed by his earlier overreaction.

But when he opened it, he found it was empty and again his anger flared. xxxDon't you know, young lady, xxx he said harshly, xxxwhen you give someone a present there's supposed to be something inside the package!xxx

The little girl looked up at him with tears rolling from her eyes and said: xxxDaddy, it's not empty. I blew kisses into it until it was all full.xxx

The father was crushed. He fell on his knees and put his arms around his precious little girl. He begged her to forgive him for his unnecessary anger.

An accident took the life of the child only a short time later. It is told that the father kept that little gold box by his bed for all the years of his life. Whenever he was discouraged or faced difficult problems he would open the box, take out an imaginary kiss, and remember the love of this beautiful child who had put it there.

In a very real sense, each of us as human beings have been given an invisible golden box filled with unconditional love and kisses from our children, family, friends and God.

There is no more precious possession anyone could hold.

(三)Happiness Equateswith Fun?

I live in Hollywood. You may think people in such a glamorous, fun-filled place are happier than others. If so, you have some mistaken ideas about the nature of happiness.

Many intelligent people still equate happiness with fun. The truth is that fun and happiness have little or nothing in common. Fun is what we experience during an act. Happiness is what we experience after an act. It is a deeper, more abiding emotion.

Going to an amusement park or ball game, watching a movie or television, are fun activities that help us relax, temporarily forget our problems and maybe even laugh. But they do not bring happiness, because their positive effects end when the fun ends.

I have often thought that if Hollywood stars have a role to play, it is to teach us that happiness has nothing to do with fun. These rich, beautiful inpiduals have constant access to glamorous parties, fancy cars, expensive homes, everything that spells xxxhappinessxxx.

But in memoir after memoir, celebrities reveal the unhappiness hidden beneath all their fun: depression, alcoholism, drug addiction, broken marriages, troubled children, profound loneliness.

The way people cling to the belief that a fun-filled, pain-free life equates happiness actually diminishes their chances of ever attaining real happiness. If fun and pleasure are equated with happiness, then pain must be equated with unhappiness. But, in fact, the opposite is true: More times than not, things that lead to happiness involve some pain.

As a result, many people avoid the very endeavors that are the source of true happiness. They fear the pain inevitably brought by such things as marriage, raising children, professional achievement, religious commitment, civic or charitable work, and self-improvement.

(四)Today is a Gift

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room‘s only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end.

They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation. And every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. The man in the other bed began to live for those one-hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside.

The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color of the rainbow. Grand old trees graced the landscape, and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in exquisite detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene.

One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade passing by. Although the other man couldn‘t hear the band - he could see it in his mind‘s eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.

Days and weeks passed. One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.

As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone. Slowly and painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the world outside. Finally, he would have the joy of seeing it for himself. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window beside the bed. It faced a blank wall.

The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window. The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall. She said, xxxPerhaps he just wanted to encourage you.xxx

(五)Is Packing Important to You?

A young man was getting ready to graduate from college. For many months he had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealer's showroom, and knowing his father could well afford it, he told him that was all he wanted.

As Graduation Day approached, the young man awaited signs that his father had purchased the car. Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his private study. His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine son, and told him how much he loved him. He handed his son a beautiful wrapped gift box. Curious, but somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the box and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible, with the young man's name embossed in gold.

Angrily, he raised his voice to his father and said, xxxWith all your money you give me a Bible?xxx He then stormed out of the house, leaving the Bible.

Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He had a beautiful home and a wonderful family, but realizing his father was very old, he thought perhaps he should go to see him. He had not seen him since that graduation day. Before he could make the arrangements, he received a telegram telling him his father had passed away, and willed all of his possessions to his son. He needed to come home immediately and take care of things.

When he arrived at his father's house, sudden sadness and regret filled his heart. He began to search through his father's important papers and saw the still new Bible, just as he

had left it years ago.

With tears, he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages. As he was reading, a car key dropped from the back of the Bible. It had a tag with the dealer's name, the same dealer who had the sports car he had desired. On the tag was the date of his graduation, and the words… xxxPAID IN FULLxxx.

How many times do we miss blessings because they are not packaged as we expected? I trust you enjoyed this. Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; but remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for. Sometimes we don't realize the good fortune we have or we could have because we expect xxxthe packagingxxx to be different. What may appear as bad fortune may in fact be the door that is just waiting to be opened.

(六)The Baby Eagle

Once upon a time there was a baby eagle living in a nest perched on a cliff overlooking a beautiful valley with waterfalls and streams, trees and lots of little animals, scurrying about enjoying their lives.

The baby eagle liked the nest. It was the only world he had ever known. It was warm and comfortable, had a great view, and even better, he had all the food and love and attention that a great mother eagle could provide. Many times each day the mother would swoop down from the sky and land in the nest and feed the baby eagle delicious morsels of food. She was like a god to him, he had no idea where she came from or how she worked her magic.

The baby eagle was hungry all the time, but the mother eagle would always come just in time with the food and love and attention he craved. The baby eagle grew strong. His vision grew very sharp. He felt good all the time.

Until one day, the mother stopped coming to the nest.

The baby eagle was hungry. xxxI'm sure to die,xxx said the baby eagle, all the time.

xxxVery soon, death is coming, xxx he cried, with tears streaming down his face. Over and over. But there was no one there to hear him.

Then one day the mother eagle appeared at the top of the mountain cliff, with a big bowl of delicious food and she looked down at her baby. The baby looked up at the mother and cried xxxWhy did you abandon me? I'm going to die any minute. How could you do this to me?xxx

The mother said, xxxHere is some very tasty and nourishing food, all you have to do is come get it.xxx

xxxCome get it!xxx said the baby, with much anger. xxxHow?xxx

The mother flew away.

The baby cried and cried and cried.

A few days later, xxxI'm going to end it all,xxx he said. xxxI give up. It is time for me to die.xxx

He didn't know his mother was nearby. She swooped down to the nest with his last meal.

xxxEat this, it's your last meal, xxx she said.

The baby cried, but he ate and whined and whined about what a bad mother she was.

xxxYou're a terrible mother, xxx he said. Then she pushed him out of the nest.

He fell.

Head first.

Picked up speed.

Faster and faster.

He screamed. xxxI'm dying I'm dying, xxx he cried. He picked up more speed.

He looked up at his mother. xxxHow could you do this to me?xxx

He looked down.

The ground rushed closer, faster and faster. He could visualize his own death so clearly, coming so soon, and cried and whined and complained. xxxThis isn't fair!xxx he screamed.

Something strange happens.

The air caught behind his arms and they snapped away from his body, with a feeling unlike anything he had ever experienced. He looked down and saw the sky. He wasn't moving towards the ground anymore, his eyes were pointed up at the sun.

xxxHuh?xxx he said. xxxWhat is going on here!xxx

xxxYou're flying,xxx his mother said.

xxxThis is fun!xxx laughed the baby eagle, as he soared and ped and swooped.

xxxYes it is!xxx said the mother.

xxxLeave him alonexxx I yelled as I walked out of the orphanage gate and saw several of the Spring Park School bullies pushing the deaf kid around. I did not know the boy at all but I knew that we were about the same age, because of his size. He lived in the old white house across the street from the orphanage where I lived. I had seen him on his front porch several times doing absolutely nothing, except just sitting there making funny like hand movements.

In the summer time we didn't get much to eat for Sunday supper, except watermelon and then we had to eat it outside behind the dining room so we would not make a mess on the tables inside. About the only time that I would see him was through the high chain-link fence that surrounded the orphanage when we ate our watermelon outside.

The deaf kid started making all kind of hand signals, real fast like. xxxYou are a stupid idiotxxx said the bigger of the two bullies as he pushed the boy down on the ground. The other bully ran around behind the boy and kicked him as hard as he could in the back. The deaf boy's body started shaking all over and he curled up in a ball trying to shield and hide his face. He looked like he was trying to cry, or something but he just couldn't make any sounds, I don't think.

I ran as fast as I could back through the orphanage gate and into the thick azalea bushes. I uncovered my home-made bow which I had constructed out of bamboo and string. I grabbed four arrows that were also made of bamboo and they had coca cola tops bent around the ends to make real sharp tips. Then I ran back out the gate with an arrow cocked in the bow and I just stood there quiet like, breathing real hard just daring either one of them to kick or touch the boy again.

xxxYou're a dumb freak just like him you big eared creepxxx said one of the boys as he grabbed his friend and backed off far enough so that the arrow would not hit them. xxxIf you're so brave kick him again nowxxx I said, shaking like a leaf. The bigger of the two bullies ran up and kicked the deaf boy in the middle of his back as hard as he could and then he ran out of arrow range again.

The boy jerked about and then made a sound that I will never forget for as long as I live. It was the sound like a whale makes when it has been harpooned and knows that it is about to die. I fired all four of my arrows at the two bullies as they ran away laughing about what they had done.

I pulled the boy up off the ground and helped him back to his house which was about two blocks down the street from the school building. When we reached his home his sister told me that her brother was deaf but that he was not dumb like the two bullies said. That he was very smart but could not say or hear anything. I told her that he did make a sound when the bully kicked him in the back. She told me that I must be mistaken because all her brother's vocal cords had been removed during an experimental surgery, which had failed.

The boy made one of those hand signs at me as I was about to leave. I asked his sister xxxif your brother is so smart then why is he doing things like that with his hands?xxx She told me that he was saying that he loved me with his hands. I didn't say anything back to her at all because I didn't believe her. People can't talk with their hands and everybody knows that. People can only talk with their mouth.

Almost every Sunday for the next year or two I could see the boy through the chain-link fence as we ate watermelon outside behind the dining room, during the summer time. He always made that same funny hand sign at me and I would just wave back at him, not knowing what else to do.

On my very last day in the orphanage I was being chased by the police. They told me that I was being sent off to the Florida School for Boys Reform School, at Marianna so I ran to get away from them. They chased me around the dining room building several times and finally I made a dash for the chain-link fence and tried to climb over in order to escape. I saw the deaf boy sitting there on his porch just looking at me as they pulled me down from the fence and handcuffed me. The boy, now about twelve jumped up and ran across San Diego Road, placed his fingers through the chain-link fence and just stood there looking at us.

They dragged me by my legs, screaming and yelling for more than several hundred yards through the dirt and pine-straw to the waiting police car. All I could hear the entire time was the high pitched sound of that whale being harpooned again. As we pulled away in the police car I saw the deaf boy loosen his grip on the fence and slide very slowly to the ground and lower his head into the leaves and pine straw. That is when I realized that he probably really did love me and he wanted to save me because he thought that I too was making the whale sound.
